Paris Hilton in India – are we reading too much into it?

Less than a fortnight ago, there are two celebrities in India – one was Paris Hilton and the other was Lewis Hamilton. There is a hard talk going around about the beautiful lady and she is making news even for giving $100 note to a beggar. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton has had his share of news, but did not get as big an exposure as did Paris Hilton.

So the question arises, do we put in a lot of publicity for foreign ladies that put their foot in India. There was news about Ms. Hilton even when she had not even prepared her luggage to fly towards India. Yes, after all that is what a celebrity means.

She was in the news even when her team was preparing a possible interview for the socialite in India. Chances were she could be interviewed by either Karan Johar or Simi Garewal. Karan Johar was the first choice to interview Paris Hilton on his popular show Koffee with Karan. But the interview never materialized.

The reason was that Karan Johar was bounded by the chains of terms and conditions put before him. Some of the terms stated that Paris should not be asked about the drug use, the jail term or the sex tape. The film maker was also asked not to ask any sort of personal question about the celebrity.

To start off, and in the run up towards the interview, Karan Johar accepted some of the conditions put before him. Conversely, the flow of the ifs and buts just did not reduce. That was too much for Mr. Johar who hardly liked to get dictated by anyone. There was no chance of him interviewing Paris.

When Simi Garewal was approached, she plainly refused to go about the task. It was but natural for her to refuse. How could she accept the interview? It was certainly a prestige point for the lady. She did not get a tag of the last minute choice and the second option. Moreover, she was busy with the post production work of her interviews which she had with Bollywood stars like Asin, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Rani Mukerji and Kangna Ranaut.

Some months ago, Pamela Anderson was in India to participate in the reality show Bigg Boss. Everyone knew that the participation of the sexy lady was only to pop the eye balls and to increase the TRP of the show. There were news about Pamela day in and day out. There is no harm in having the publicity to the guests.

But at times, it seems that there is too much of exposure given. How many of us know that along with Paris Hilton, there is Lewis Hamilton in India too, leave alone Bangalore? Why is there such a great craze for these celebrities?

Please understand one thing before criticizing the write-up. Whatever the question I am posing here, are not directed at playing down the hype or the publicity people like Paris Hilton or Pamela Anderson create. It is their ability to do so and that is why they are there where they rightly deserve.

I like the question you are posing here..I also heard about objections of having foreigners being in the bollywood songs.

I feel there is no harm in having diversity. We, as adults should be able to know what is right and wrong and welcome different ethnicity.

You are right Ruchira. But India has always been known to entertain film stars more than sports stars from sports other than cricket. That could be one reason why there are not many takers for these sports like cricket.
